Spending on Social Media Expected to Rise by 50% in Large Enterprises

Research shows company size is not predictive of a 'highly integrated,' multi-channel social strategy

Baltimore, MD – June 16, 2011 – R2integrated (r2i), a leading digital marketing and technology design firm, releases results from its most recent Cross-Channel Brand Targeting and Tracking research, covering both B2B and B2C businesses.

The Baltimore-based digital marketing agency conducted both quantitative and qualitative research over a two-month period, including online surveys, site visits and focus groups. A number of surprising insights emerged from the studies:

  • Enterprises with more than 500 employees expect spending on social to rise by 50% in the coming two years (from 5.4% to 8.25% of total paid media).
  • Companies with under 500 employees were most likely to describe their social strategy as 'highly integrated' across marketing channels
  • 62% syndicate their branded content through third party platforms, although just over a third indicate they currently have programs to identify specific influencers to engage
  • Just over half of survey respondents indicated they integrate third party content within their own branded properties
  • Three fourths of the respondents indicated they did not provide unique content for mobile devices.

Almost half of the companies represented by respondents (44.6%) were B2B businesses, and 25% indicated their company supported both B2B and B2C customers. A third of respondents were senior managers, and third held titles of director or above.
