I plan to buy an iPad. How I will use it remains to be seen. It may be my new photo album, or gaming console, or personal music device, or my book reader, or all of the above. It will certainly move all around my house from my basement to my living room, from my bedroom to my patio. I wonder, however, if I will bring it with me when I travel and already have my laptop in tow.
The first generation iPad is a revolutionary personal media device. Individuals like me who consume media such as magazines, newspapers, videos, games, and books, can do so in digital form wherever they want, whenever they want with the iPad. The first version iPads, however, are basically receiving devices and not necessarily creation devices like our laptops—at least for now.
Because the iPad is now a receiving device, count on the creation of an entire Internet-based or e-based advertising platform around it. This will usher in a new era of services offered by digital marketing companies, ad agencies, brand managers, and more, and you will actually witness a new advertising model evolving very quickly—not unlike the advertising paradigm that evolved on laptops with the first generation of Internet publishing.
Once there is some maturation of the content distribution process, you will see ad messages on the pages of your iPad. There will also be advergaming, advertising as you download and read books, advertising as you peruse photos, advertising on your videos, and many other business applications and models in the advertising space.
The next generation or subsequent versions of the iPad may be more of a creation device when Apple builds out or improves the keyboard, increases the iPad’s computing capabilities, and the unit’s software becomes more powerful. The question will then become whether I should bring my iPad OR my laptop.
I am inclined to wait until these changes happen before purchasing my iPad, but I will keep a close eye on how this remarkable technology and its applications develop.

I’m a sucker for all things Apple. I can’t wait to get my hands on an iPad. However, I hope they don’t disappoint me as they did with the iPhone. Firstly they did a deal with Orange (in the UK) so you could only get it on a network that is useless where I live. Secondly you have to dial-up or be connected to WiFi for your Internet connection – useless for me as I use Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger all the time. When I’m buzzed, I need to be buzzed in real time, not just when I connect. So it’s Blackberry for me until they sort that one out.

Take the iPad with you on a meeting and see the decision makers eyes widen:
“Wow – these guys are ahead of the tech curve, they must know what they’re doing”
Combine that with R2I’s reputation.. sold.

Hi Matt, I plan on purchasing one as well but will likely wait a few months. 2 key things about the ipad that did surprise me:
1. No Webcam – With Skype and other services as prevalent as they are I would tink the ipad would haveone, it would make it an ideal platform for video conferencing on the go.
2. No USB Ports – huh!?!? How are we to easily get photos from the camera onto the ipad?
Regardless I am sure the interface is great and plan on getting one eventually.

The iPad has a high-quality and it is useful but too expensive. Similar products are cheaper and have more or less the same functionality. But the iPad is a product of apple which is a little bit better and so I think it’s for every fan a must have product.

Interesting perspective Matt. I have been getting more and more intrigued about the iPad. The most attractive feature sets for me are the periodicals, magazines, news sources, and book reader. From a business development perspective, being able to get my hands on actionable intelligence from many different sources from such a relatively small (compared to most laptops) device is attractive. Most cell or smart phones don’t seem to cut it in this area for me. From a “leisure” perspective; any games, videos, etc. will most likely get utilized heavily by my wife. At least our ROI will more easily be justified this way!
As far as those willing to part ways with their laptops, only time will tell. Give it 2 years…then we can start drawing some intelligent decisions.

“Because the iPad is now a receiving device, count on the creation of an entire Internet-based or e-based advertising platform around it.” Well, you’re right on target Matt. The one feature I detest in regards to the ipad is the fact that you cannot see flash content. That is I beleive the tabs with Android working system are a good substitute… even when the Android working system drains your battery like crazy.

iPad has now many features it has now have two cameras for FaceTime and HD video recording. The dual-core A5 chip. The same 10-hour battery life. All in a thinner, lighter design. Now iPad is even more amazing. And even less like anything else.
